About five years ago I was in contact with Internal Affairs about getting a spreadsheet of all the venues in Wellington so I could create a Mail out to all venues, which I did, attaching my photo I'd of my drivers licence, sending two copies and asking them to send one back, or, asking them to email and address I add to the letter confirming the ban was in place.

Of the 40 I printed, enveloped and sent, I got mailed responses of five, and emailed of none. One response took seven months!

I did it this way because got tired of walking around looking for these places while at the same time trying to avoid entering them!

There are about fifty something venues from memory and the other remaining ones I personally talked to the closest ones too me, signed the forms and made sure they made their staff aware of the self exclusion.

After a while, when the temptation to play gave in, I frequented several of the places I had banned myself. Only one picked it up and turned me away.

I discussed this with Internal Affairs, who, five years ago said they were looking at a blanket way of banning oneself. These were people who were dedicated Problem gambling staff. Five years later I don't see any movement of that initiative, so I have to every two years send out these forms all over again.

The very exercise of putting hours of work into contacting pokie venues is in itself soul destroying, and brings every chance of giving up and going and playing instead. You type the venues name, remember what the venue is like, hear its bells and whistles, try to put that out of your min...then type the next name.

On the DIA website there's about a million forms that pertain to pokie machines, how to get the license, do the totals etc etc, and one self exclusion form.

I should be able to tick a box and bang, I have no way of playing pokies in NZ, but no, I have to trudge around town visiting all the places I'm trying to avoid, or write to them every two years, just to get near feeling safe.

If I had my way I would round them all up and dump them in a big black hole, barring that I would insist that every venue is 100% staffed with a person checking every pokie room against the ban list, or, have some sort of card that needs to inserted into the machine with a method available to stop using someone else's card.

And the term...two years maximum. Who sets that? Who decided that pokie addiction has a maximum life of two years? Does the addiction magically go away when you wake up on the 105th week?

Well I can tell you after way more than a 1000 weeks that it doesn't. So the onus is on me, the gambler to re-self ban myself every two years because my ban has 'expired' and I can tell you, they do check, see your name, look at the date, see it is expired, then allow you to play without a word. I know, I've seen it many a time.

Apologies for the rant but there simply must be a better way.

The system is designed to have people fall through the gaps. The last thing I said to Internal Affairs is if there were no pokie machines ten years ago, my life would be a lot different now. The response was they're looking seriously into making it easier to self ban.

Five years later, not one thing has changed.

Hi Chris.

Your frustration is understandable around the process you went through of self excluding from all the venues in Wellington five years ago and the lack of responses you received from them. There is a process available whereby you do not have to visit each of the venues. You can arrange a multi venue exclusion through the support of a multi venue coordinator. If you call the Gambling Helpline, we can provide you with the contact of the MVE in your area.

Kind Regards
The Gambling Helpline Team

Really?
Ok, I will do that, today. Looks like something may have been done after all.

Thanks

Ps...having looked on the net it doesn't look as though Wellington is involved in the scheme yet, they seem to have targeted the casino based areas first. That was the case five years ago though it looks to have widened somewhat. Anyway, while I'm on that thought path I'll see what the helpline has to say. Even if I can get assistance with doing it myself might help.

Have an appointment this week to self ban them all. In Wellington only Lower Hutt is covered by a bulk self exclusion but I'm told I'm able to bring the names of the venues in addition to that so that individual self exclusions can be arranged.

So I'm going to download the latest spreadsheet from the DIA site that has all NZs venues, names, addresses etc and include those.

So things are looking up there...evening all.

That's great news Chris- we're please to hear that you are forming a plan and that things are looking up. Let us know how it goes.
